From Australia to Chicago
and back again, Tania Bowers has forged her own musical path. Initially
gaining her stage legs with SPDFGH, a band formed with her sister
during high school, Tania would later trade punk’s grinding
chords for the dark murmurs contained within a piano. Soon thereafter,
she would discover the dramatic subtleties gained through utilizing
various aspects of electronic music.
Under the name Sunday, Tania released an EP, “Thema,”
and a seven-inch, “Universe City.” The latter would
be her first release on Chocolate Industries; it is now very hard
to find. These two releases alone said so much by way of understated
beauty that many listeners were left wanting.
Her third solo release, “Dream Of…,” would tease
listeners even more with its lush arrangements and more haunting
lyricism. Soon thereafter, Tania began charting a musical map of
her move from Australia to Chicago.
Although recording began in a simplistic manner, “Under A
Different Sky” |
would turn into a sonic
chameleon of sorts, the album taking on a different tone with each
collaboration.Different moods and
layers of personalities reveal themselves with each track; no two
listenings are the same.
The two releases that followed, “Lightning and Thunder”
and “Boltanski,” would prove equally stirring, featuring
a New Order cover as well as remixes from Prefuse 73 and John Herndon.
This year sees the release of a new EP, “True,” combining
elements of Tania’s punk beginnings, a future shrouded in
dub, and all the best bits in between.
